College Readiness - Texas Center for Student Success (TCSS)

Welcome to the online home for the Texas Center for Student Success (TCSS). TCSS aims to provide the means for Texas public schools to create effective, targeted interventions and instructional acceleration in all content areas and grade levels. To meet these goals, the Institute for Public School Initiatives (IPSI) has assembled a team of experienced, highly-trained educators to identify and disseminate relevant research, resources, and exemplars that target the areas of intervention and acceleration.

Overview

Project Goals

With the establishment of the Texas Center for Student Success, IPSI and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) seek to achieve three key goals.

  • The first goal is to help Texas public school districts and charter schools meet the Reading Diagnosis requirements as described in the Texas Education Code (see §28.006(g)).
  • The second goal is to assist Texas public school districts and charter schools as they meet accelerated instruction requirements mandated by House Bill 3, passed during the 81st Texas Legislature (see H.B. 3 here).
  • The third goal is to provide districts with exemplar intervention and acceleration practices disseminated through the TEA's Project Share platform and in statewide conferences.

Project Background

The General Appropriations Act, Article III, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature, Rider 42, authorizes the commissioner to set aside an amount not to exceed $300 million dollars during the biennium for the Student Success Initiative to focus on reading, math and postsecondary success. Grants are provided to districts for the purpose of implementation of scientifically-validated and research-based instructional strategies on campuses at which students are identified as unlikely to achieve the TAKS reading standard by the end of third grade, TAKS reading and math standards by the end of grades five and eight, those students unlikely to meet the end-of-course Algebra I standard in high school, and to ensure postsecondary readiness in all core content areas.

Student Success Initiative Grant (SSIG) Guidelines

SSIG funding is to be used to provide intensive and targeted interventions for students in grades K-12 who have been identified as "at-risk" for academic difficulties in the core content areas. The goals of the SSIG grant are to identify and implement appropriate interventions for struggling students in K-12, to increase the number of students who are academically ready to meet or exceed the passing standards on state assessments, and to improve instructional effectiveness of teachers and school leaders.

For information on the SSIG grant, visit this section of the TEA website and select "2010-2011 Student Success Initiative Grant Application" from the drop-down menu.

For information on SSIG Guidelines and Reporting Requirements, see this document.

Project Share

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has designed a comprehensive learning website called Project Share. This site provides access to educational resources and online learning, and allows participants to collaborate in an interactive and engaging environment. TCSS has created a course within Project Share titled Improving Student Performance - Best Practices in Intervention and Acceleration. This course is designed to provide educators with PK-12 research, resources, and exemplars related to intervention and accelerating instruction. To learn about Project Share and to gain access to our course or others' courses, go to www.projectsharetexas.org.

Should you have questions specifically about Project Share, please direct them to projectshare@tea.state.tx.us.

Conferences

TCSS will sponsor or present at regionally-based conferences that focus on providing leaders and teachers with methods to increase instructional rigor. Additionally, TCSS will share research, resources, and exemplars for ongoing guidance and support that may enhance intervention and acceleration instructional practices for struggling students. To attend one of our currently scheduled conferences, contact the host Educational Service Center (ESC) website or send an email request for registration details to the IPSI address provided.

  • No conferences scheduled at this time

Please check back periodically for updates on additional conferences being scheduled.

Exemplars

TCSS is identifying elementary, middle, and high school exemplar campuses that are effectively implementing an intervention model and/or accelerating instruction for struggling students resulting in increased student achievement. Once identified, these exemplar campuses will serve as models to other schools. Instructive modeling artifacts and tools (i.e. videos, schedules, data analysis tools) will be featured on the Project Share website in the TCSS course, as well as during upcoming conferences.
