School Improvement Support Services: An ESC 18 and IPSI Partnership

The University of Texas at Austin’s Institute for Public School Initiatives (IPSI) established a partnership with the Education Service Center (ESC) 18 in Midland, Texas, to provide professional development and onsite professional learning opportunities for campus and district leaders and teachers during the 2017–2018 school year. IPSI and ESC 18 team members collaboratively designed a professional development series for leaders and teachers aimed at reflecting on or improving existing systems to increase student achievement. The series includes the following sessions:

  • Systems Overview and Campus Self-Inventory and Analysis
  • Explicit Instruction and Instructional Depth and Rigor
  • Backward Design and Assessment Development
  • The Complexity of a Changing System
  • Building Relationships: An Approach to Changing Culture and Climate
  • The Instructional Leader as Coach
  • Using Data to Differentiate Instruction for ALL learners
  • Determining and Planning Critical Content
  • Systemic Reform: Next Steps

ESC 18 and IPSI established additional partnerships to offer onsite professional learning opportunities and to work more closely with all stakeholder groups at the campus or district level. Additional partnerships, along with respective areas of focus and target audiences, include

  • Big Spring High School, Big Spring Independent School District (ISD)
    • Instructional Coaching and Standards-Based Planning
    • Audience: English language arts department
  • De Zavala Elementary, Midland ISD
    • Peer Coaching and Explicit Vocabulary Instruction
    • Audience: Kindergarten through grade 6 teachers and campus leaders
  • Lamar Elementary, Midland ISD
    • Standards-Based Planning
    • Audience: Grade 3 through grade 6 teachers and campus leaders
  • Midland ISD
    • Backward Design, Assessment Blueprints, and Writing Test Items
    • Audience: District executive directors and curriculum and instruction coordinators; campus leaders
